A cold morning indeed, but our hearts were warmed by the incredible outpouring of support we saw throughout the day. We had the opportunity to pick up donated food items at two local schools, Stoney Creek Elementary and Huntingtowne Farms Elementary. The amount of food donated by the families of the children at those schools was extraordinary. We were truly in awe. What an honor to play a small role in that effort. In addition, the Republican Party has retained control of both houses of Congress. This outcome marks a significant reversal from just a few weeks ago when a Hillary Clinton presidency was highly probable and even a Democratic party sweep of Congress was possible.

Managing Director, Ed Doughty, and Client Services Associate Jason Dimitriou just returned from an 8-day trip serving in the Dominican Republic with Wine To Water, a North Carolina based non-profit that aims to eradicate the global water crisis. While there, they worked in a factory where they learned the ceramic filter making process. They then distributed the filters to locals in a remote mountainside community. In addition they were able to pass out over 130 hygiene kits as well as teach a WaSH program (Water, Santitation and Hygiene). To learn more about this extraordinary organization that is very near and dear to us here at Epic Capital, or to help support their efforts, please visit them at http://winetowater.org
What a FUN morning, “gleaning” watermelons with the Society of St. Andrew at Barbee Farms in Concord, NC. Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields after they have been commercially harvested, and giving them to the poor and impoverished. We gleaned about 5,000 pounds of melons which has already been delivered to Hickory Grove Baptist’s food pantry, to soup kitchens/pantries in Kannapolis, and to a low income apartment community in East Charlotte. For more information or to volunteer with the Society of St. Andrew – Carolinas, contact Jean Siers or visit their website: http://endhunger.org/north-carolina/

What an incredible way to start the day, prepping and serving lunch for the women at Dove’s Nest, a women’s residential facility that supports women and their children who are suffering from the disease of drug and alcohol addiction. We met some truly inspiring women, and would encourage others to learn more about the incredible work they do. Supported and run by the Charlotte Rescue Mission, visit their website at CharlotteRescueMission.org

Few terms in personal finance are as important, or used as frequently, as “risk.” Nevertheless, few terms are as imprecisely defined. Generally, when financial advisors or the media talk about investment risk, their focus is on the historical price volatility of the asset or investment under discussion.
