Lower again. US stocks opened lower, after big gains yesterday. Incredibly, Tuesday was the seventh consecutive day the S&P 500 Index closed either up or down more than 4%, an all-time record. As COVID-19 cases continue to grow and social-distancing efforts are strengthened around the United States and globally, expectations for economic growth and corporate profits continue to fall. Signs of a Washout?

The S&P 500 Index’s historic washout continued yesterday, culminating in nearly a 10% loss for the day, and leaving the benchmark index officially in bear market territory, just 16 trading days after setting a record high on February 19. In addition, the S&P 500 has now moved more than 4% each day this week, leaving investors and professionals alike wondering when this volatility could end. While nobody knows for sure, one thing we always look for at market bottoms are signs of extremes, both from a sentiment and price perspective. (more…)

The historic volatility continues, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average officially setting its fastest move from a new all-time high to a bear market (down 20% from the highs) in the 124-year history of the index. On October 16, 2008 in an editorial for The New York Times, Warren Buffett, considered by many to be one of the greatest investors of his generation, repeated one of his favorite maxims: Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful. The market would subsequently see considerable losses before reaching their lows almost five months later on March 6, 2009. Buffett didn’t call the bottom, and there were still gains to be made for highly tactical investors who were betting against stocks. But looking back on Buffett’s remarks today, the advice was quite prescient. (more…)

While nature offers four seasons, Wall Street offers only one – four times a year. It’s called “earnings season,” and it can move the markets. So, what is earnings season, and why is it important?

Earnings season is the month of the year that follows each calendar quarter-end month (January, April, July, and October). It is the time during which many public companies release quarterly earnings reports.
